Our History

 

A Legacy Rooted in the Waters of the West of Ireland

 

The O’Donnell family has been immersed in the fishing industry for four generations, harvesting the rich, nutrient-dense waters off the West Coast of Ireland. Based in Porturlin Harbour, our story is one of tradition, innovation, and a deep respect for the sea.

 

 

In 1980, Patrick O’Donnell Snr purchased his first fishing vessel — the 36ft crabber “John Michelle”. Several years later, recognising the growing demand for premium crab, he upgraded to the larger 40ft “Rachel Mary”, a vessel requiring a three-man crew and operating primarily between February and November.

 

 

In 2002, Patrick’s eldest son Jonathan joined the family business as a deckhand aboard the Rachel Mary. Just two years later, he purchased his own vessel, the 38ft crabber “James Collins”, marking the beginning of the next chapter in the O’Donnell fishing legacy.

 

In 2011, Patrick’s younger son, also named Patrick, entered the business. Having gained valuable experience fishing alongside Jonathan, he acquired the 33ft catamaran “Aisling Patrick”. Following its success, Jonathan invested in his own catamaran, and in 2013, the “Michelle Na Mára” joined the fleet.

 

 

With demand for live Brown Crab continuing to rise, Jonathan and Patrick recognised the need for larger, more capable vessels to fish year-round. In 2016, Jonathan’s new 50ft crabber “Sean Óg 2” launched, followed by Patrick’s vessel “Seimi” later that same year.

 

To meet increasing international demand, two state-of-the-art, purpose-built viver crabbers — “Michelle Na Mára” and “Aodh Na Mára” — were added to the fleet in 2021 and 2022. Equipped with the latest technology, these modern vessels ensure an efficient and sustainable crab-catching operation.

 

 

West Coast Crab Sales Ltd remains firmly focused on delivering premium-quality Brown Crab and European Lobster to European and global markets. We proudly supply both live and processed crab and work closely with our customers to meet evolving market needs.
